They are heralded as unofficial
worldwide ambassadors for Michigan and its arts.
They travel the globe extensively, sharing messages about the spirited pulse of music, art and dance in the Great Lakes Mitten. They invite people from local and faraway places to view their expansive art collection and experience how appreciation for the arts immeasurably enriches humanity. They often lend that collection to museums around the world. Their humanitarian efforts have had a positive influence on the lives and varied fields they hold dear—the arts, education, medicine, young people and a strong commitment to community. And, through it all, there is never a doubt that they truly care deeply about the people they encounter. They are Maxine and Stuart Frankel, the 2004 recipients of the Civic Leader Award for the 19th Annual ArtServe Michigan Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture. They will receive that honor on November 18th at The Henry Ford in Dearborn. As outstanding philanthropists, the Frankels serve on numerous non-profit and charitable boards and commissions across the state and country. In addition to their enduring gift of time and hard work, their most recent measure of sharing was an unprecedented $10 million contribution to the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). The Frankels’ generosity will aid the prominent museum, labeled as “in the forefront” of its field (The New York Times), in its drive to double its current space. James Steward, UMMA Director, stated that the Frankels’ support for the museum reflects their profound commitment to the visual arts, the university and education. “The museum’s vision for the future as a vibrant gathering place, a true center for campus life and a gateway for the broader public to U of M’s historic campus” is now closer to fruition due to the remarkable gift from Maxine and Stuart Frankel, Steward said. The Frankels, University of Michigan graduates in 1961 and 1966, stand firmly behind Steward’s “visionary leadership.” Maxine Frankel said in a September, 2004 article in Museum of Art News that Steward has brought the “UMMA into the top ranks of university art museums in the country.” In the same interview, Maxine added: “As alumni and arts patrons, Stuart and I enthusiastically share James’ vision and commitment to the transformative educational mission of the museum. With this gift, we support the museum’s remarkable institutional growth and its increasing prominence as a leader in developing exhibitions and other projects that link scholarship with the community.” Maxine Frankel also chairs the Board of Governors at the Cranbrook Art Academy and Museum, where she also serves on the Cranbrook Educational Community’s Executive Committee. She is chair and board member of the International Associates of New York’s Independent Curators International. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan receives her guidance through her membership in both the board and executive committees, as do the advisory boards of The Detroit Institute of Arts and Common Ground. Stuart Frankel is president of Stuart Frankel Development Company, a real estate development firm based in Troy, where he also serves on the Downtown Development Authority. He and Maxine have two children.
