Nomination & Selection Process

Now in its 20th year, ArtServe Michigan Governor's Awards for Arts & Culture program honors outstanding achievement by individuals and organizations that create, foster and support arts and culture in Michigan. An annual awards gala brings together the arts, cultural, educational and business communities to celebrate and to focus statewide and national attention on the excellence and achievements of Michigan’s thriving cultural sector.

Each spring, ArtServe Michigan holds a public nomination period for all categories.  Winners of the ArtServe Michigan Governor's Awards for Arts & Culture are selected by a rotating volunteer committee of Michigan residents representing a wide range of artistic and cultural disciplines and geographic regions of the state. New this year is the Michigan Artist People's Choice Award.  Click here to view nominees.

Deadline for Nominations

All nominations must received by 5 PM, July 15, 2005.  This is not a postmark deadline.  Faxed nominations are not accepted.

Nomination Procedure

All Michigan residents are welcome to nominate in one or more categories that appear on the nomination form.  A nomination consists of:

  • A complete nomination form, including full contact information for both the nominee(s) and the nominator
  • A brief statement of no more than 300 words describing why the nominee should be recognized. (Use a separate sheet of paper for each nominee)

Please note that the Arts in Education and Emerging Artist categories have additional requirements (below).

In addition, nominators are required, to submit no more than five (5) pages of supporting materials. Support materials may include a good description of why the nominee should receive the award; letters of support; reviews, etc. These 5 pages must be no larger than 8.5" x 11" and must be easy to reproduce on a black and white photocopier. Materials exceeding the five-page limit or the size limit will not be considered in the selection process.

You are welcome to resubmit a past (unsuccessful) nomination; however, it is highly recommended that the nomination be updated.  It must also comply with the limitations stated above.

Past winners are again eligible for nomination ten (10) years after receipt of their last such award.

Winners are announced in late summer.

The ArtServe Michigan Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture are presented at an elegant black tie gala, typically held in November at a cultural institution, that draws 600 arts patrons, business people, educators, artists and others from around the state. The event, the major annual fundraiser for ArtServe Michigan, garners substantial corporate support from local and national firms. Video vignettes on each winner are later broadcast on public television stations throughout the state.

The 2005 gala will be held on November 15 at the Detroit Opera House, Detroit, MI
