Call for Entry - Hot Seats in a Cool City
Deadline: January 31, 2007
The Midland (MI) Downtown Development Authority is partnering with Northwood University for its sixth summer sculpture contest, and this year the subject is: benches! As a Michigan "Cool Cities" designate, the DDA discovered that downtown visitors dreamed of one thing:  benches to sit on to enjoy the bustle of the city’s tree-lined, shop-filled Main Street.  Thus the 2007 competition was born.
What:  Artists, craftspersons, construction and carpentry experts (on their own or partnering is fine) are invited to create a bench… and the more creative the better.
When:  Drawings with specifications for the proposed bench (or a model if preferred) submitted no later than January 31.
Specs:   Artists/craftspersons will receive a $400 stipend to build or purchase and decorate a bench of their own design.   Bench must be safely constructed, weight bearing for public seating, weatherproof.  Size, shape and materials at designer’s discretion.  Proposals will be reviewed by a structural engineer.  Otherwise: your imagination is all!
Contact:  For detailed specifications and further explanation, email Nancy Barker at
barkermid@aol.com with BENCHES! as your subject line.
